Governor of New South Wales visit

15 October, 2007

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of New South Wales will visit us on Thursday 18th October. Her Excellency will be here to launch Professor Ken Dutton’s book, A French General and a Scots Colonel. This book translates and transcribes a journal held in Cultural Collections. At one end of the book are military treatises written by General Jarry. At the other, the book was later used as a diary by Colonel Charles George Gray, who settled at Port Macquarie, after a distinguished military career, which included service at the Battle of Waterloo.

The Hartley Bequest has funded the purchase of two books relating to Colonel Charles George Gray. One bears his bookplate and is signed and annotated by Gray, as having been purchased in Brussels in April 1815 – just two months prior to the Battle of Waterloo.
