The theme for National Reconciliation Week this year is Our History, Our Story, Our Future.
Our History, Our Story, Our Future is derived from the State of Reconciliation in Australia report and has been chosen for the following reasons:
‘Our History’ is a reminder that historical acceptance serves as a reference point from which we as Australians can begin our reconciliation journey.
‘Our Story’ – A significant part of our Australian story includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ stories of trauma and triumph. ‘Our Story’ is used to remind us all that Australian stories should be inclusive of all our voices.
‘Our Future’ – By embracing our diversity and appreciating the richness of this cultural identity we are building together, we will become stronger as a nation.
3 June 1992 – 25 years ago today, the High Court of Australia made the landmark decision known as Mabo. Mabo legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land and it paved the way for land rights or Native Title.
